Vietnam Learns from China’s Authoritarian Style to Combat Coronavirus
Despite having similar ideologies, Vietnam learns that China’s authoritarian style is ineffective to combat the outbreak. With limited information from the government, China was experiencing a bad start in dealing with the coronavirus outbreak.
Vietnam, on the other hand, has shown a proactive measure since the beginning. In the beginning of February, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc signed Decision No.173.QD-TTG, categorizing the virus as a Class A contagious disease “that can transmit very rapidly and spread widely with high mortality rates.”
The Country Invites Elements of Society to the Action
Combining both democratic and authoritative measures, Vietnam administers open information and strict regulations. Of those, the citizens are actively participating in the cause.
For instance, the government bans outside gatherings of more than two people while keeping a distance of 6.5 feet. The country also supplies a number of supermarkets with body temperature tools and hand sanitizers to reduce risks of transmissions.
Vietnam Focuses on What’s Urgent
Unlike other countries that are hesitating in deciding what’s urgent, Vietnam addresses the urgency and separates it from what’s currently non-essential.
The government has disallowed ‘non-urgent’ businesses from operating, while supporting the quintessential ones such as supermarkets. Moreover, the PM also encourages the youths to take their part in the action as youths are prone to be carriers.
