Disney+ currently has 50 million paid subscribers worldwide. It put within striking range of its original subscriber estimates only five months after its launch.
Last year, the company told investors it expected Disney+ to have 60 million to 90 million global subscribers by 2024. Now, the service is almost there after five months, the firm reported Wednesday.
Disney announced that in February it had nearly 30 million paying subscribers. And also, the global reach of the company has expanded since.
The service released in the last few weeks, among other European countries, in the United Kingdom, France and Germany. Last week the service also became available in India. It was provided in tandem with the existing streaming service in the region, Hotstar.
Disney (DIS) said India represents eight million of the total. But, it did not break down the other countries ‘subscriber numbers.
Kevin Mayer, Disney’s direct-to-consumer unit president, told in a statement on Wednesday. “We’re very humbled that Disney+ resonates with millions around the globe.”
He added, “Great storytelling encourages and uplifts and we’re in the lucky role of offering a huge array of fantastic entertainment grounded in happiness and hope on Disney+.”
The company did not say that it got a boost from millions of people. Therefore, they have to stay stay at home due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The pandemic has particularly badly hit the business. Disney’s theme parks around the world have closed. Many of the year’s biggest movies have been delayed.
In addition, the Disney-owned ESPN has had to try to find out what to air after games were stopped and tournaments cancelled by sports leagues.
Disney said last week that beginning on April 19, it will furlough workers “whose jobs are not needed at this time.”
