The total number of Covid-19 cases in India to date has been recorded more than 90,000. That number exceeds the cases recorded in China. Reporting from World O Meter, the total Covid-19 cases in India rose to 91,314 on Sunday (5/17/2020). Although the government applied a tight lockdown since the end of March that has reduced transmission rates.
So far the death toll in India has looked far better. According to health ministry data, Coronavirus in India has killed 2,897 people, compared to 4,600 in China.
Indian Date Rate
The Indian death rate is quite low because of the slow infection rates. It takes 11 days for the number of cases to double, whereas before lockdown only 3.5 days. In addition, the government has used these territorial restrictions to accelerate public health actions. For example, case detection, contact tracing, isolation, and case management. Indian officials say that the low death rate because the majority of people infected with the virus have mild symptoms.
One-third of infections are from the western state of Maharashtra, with Mumbai being the most severe, followed by Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Delhi. Some of these cities are also the most important economic centers in India, complicating the government’s task when trying to reopen lockdown without triggering a large surge in infection.
India is still in a growth phase because the total cases are still increasing. Active cases grow at 3.8% (every day) – and need to go down to 0% for the country to recover as a whole. One thing of concern is the low number of tests while the population of India is large. India has increased its Covid-19 test from the beginning of April to 100,000 this week. However, Indian has 1.3 billion people which makes it lag far behind other major countries such as the United States, Britain, and Italy.
