The ongoing countrywide lockdown was extended until 31 May, announced Sunday by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
In order to curb the spread of COVID-19, the NDMA said lockdown measures need to enforce in the country for a further duration of 14 days.
According to the Union Health Ministry, the death toll due to coronavirus increased to 2,872. And, the overall number of positive cases climbed to 90,927 on Sunday morning.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi first declared the lockdown for 21 days with effect from March 25, on March 24.
First, the extension of lockdown started on May 3. And then, it continued until May 17.
Before telling the union ministries, state governments and state authorities to start the lockdown steps, the NDMA instructed the National Executive Committee (NEC) to issue notifications in the guidelines as appropriate, taking into account the need to open up economic activities while suppressing the COVID-19 outbreak.
Earlier that day, the government of Maharashtra extended the lockdown in the state until midnight on May 31. In addition, it announced some relaxations in the movement of people and goods in less-affected parts of the State.

There are three colors’ separation in this state, namely red, green, and orange zones. In addition, social distancing also helps to curfew the spread of coronavirus.
There are more than 30,000 COVID-19 cases. In fact, Maharashtra accounts for more than 30 per cent of the total cases of the deadly disease in the country.
Tamil Nadu soon followed suit and announced the extension of the lockdown until May 31 with restrictions relaxed. The government of Karnataka has prolonged the lockdown in the state but, oddly enough, only for two more days.
As per the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, there have been as many as 90,927 cases of coronavirus in the world.
If the total cases, 34,109 were diagnosed safely while so far 2,872 people have succumbed to the deadly disease.
