DITO Telecommunity said it is accelerating the rollout of its network to provide world-class internet access to the Filipino people by March next year.
President Duterte threatened to shut down the operations of Globe Telecom Inc. and PLDT Inc.
“As far as DITO Telecommunity is concerned, we all share the President’s concern over the need to provide the Filipino people with world-class connectivity, especially in the face of the pandemic,” he said.
Tamano said that, by March 2021, DITO was on track to meet the commercial rollout. “In addition, DITO is currently working on meeting the 27 Mbps [megabits per second] and 37 percent timely coverage for the January 2021 government technical audit,” Tamano said.
“As DITO Telecommunity hastens its roll-out in time for March 2021, let me assure the Filipino people that we recognize the clamor for the third major telco to already go on-air,” he said.
“DITO is doing everything it can to overcome the challenges. Then, step forward and get going as soon as possible,” Tamano said.
5th SONA on Monday, Failed to Boost Telecommunications
In his 5th SONA on Monday, Duterte threatened to shut down Globe and PLDT operations. That said, they failed to boost telecommunications services by December this year.
Crisanto said quality efficiency and growing customer demand for data were the key reasons.
It was the reason why the company spent billions of dollars. Then, it aims to improve and strengthen the network of the business.
“This year, Globe has earmarked $1.2 billion in Capex, majority of which goes to network and capacity builds. These substantial investments are paying off as we experience marked service improvements, she said.
PLDT did not comment. It said earlier this year it would invest more than P60 billion. It aims to fund the expansion of the network.
The network roll-out activities of the Globe and PLDT have been hampered by limited network team autonomy.
It was since the enhanced community quarantine was implemented in March of this year.
