A Vietnamese court yesterday, Saturday (12/12/2020) sentenced the head of the Hanoi Center for Disease Control and Prevention. He is arrested after being found guilty of wrong doing with regard to procuring equipment intended to help overcome the Covid-19 outbreak.
Nguyen Nhat Cam, 57, was accused of overestimating the cost of the Covid-19 testing system. It is during the transaction, causing a state loss of 5.4 billion Dong, the Ministry of Public Security said in a statement.
In addition, the court also sentenced nine other people to prison terms for their involvement in the matter.
With usually strict quarantine and tracking measures, Vietnam has managed to quickly contain the coronavirus outbreak. It has recorded a total of 1,395 cases and only 35 deaths.
This certainly adds to the long list of corruption in the provision of Covid-19 facilities and assistance around the world. Some time ago Indonesian Social Minister Juliari Batubara was arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission for the corruption of Covid-19 social assistance. In the operation, Juliari took Rp.10 thousand from each social assistance (bansos) amounting to Rp300 thousand.
