The United States has again added Chinese corporate entities to their blacklist. This time, the US Commerce Department is targeting companies with proven links to the Chinese military.
There are at least seven companies that are having close ties with the Chinese military. They are either supercomputing and have helped the Chinese government modernize its military or have worked on weapons of mass destruction programs.
“Supercomputing capabilities are essential for the development of many – maybe almost all – modern weapons and national security systems, such as nuclear weapons and hypersonic weapons,” said US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo quoted by CNN Business, Friday (9/4/2021).
“The Commerce Department will use its full authority to prevent China from using US technology to support efforts to modernize this unstable military,” he added.
7 Blacklisted Companies
Companies The seven Chinese companies recently added to the US blacklist are Tianjin Phytium Information Technology, Shanghai High-Performance Integrated Circuit Design Center, Sunway Microelectronics and four National Supercomputing Centers in Jinan, Shenzhen, Wuxi and Zhengzhou.
As we know, the US has begun to aggressively blacklist Chinese companies since Donald Trump led US. Several large companies such as Huawei are even on the blacklist.
The Biden administration is currently reviewing the Trump-era policies and others. So far, US officials appear set to maintain the Trump administration’s confrontational posture towards China. President Biden’s infrastructure plan, for example, which highlights the strategic threat posed by China is one of the proofs. China still appears to be considered a competitor in technology and R&D by the Biden Administration.
