Following commercialization of 5G, China is speeding up development of technologies to preempt 6G.
According to the Global Times, the China Institute of Information and Communication under the Chinese government announced its goal to commercialize 6G in 2030 in a white paper the previous day.
The white paper revealed its overall vision for 6G and also stated 10 technologies that are key to developing 6G technologies.
China has started researching on 6G since 2019, which is considered to be ahead of the U.S.
Chinese experts pointed out that there is a high possibility that China will preoccupy up to 6G following 5G.
Experts also said it is important to reduce reliance on foreign company patents and achieve technology independence in relation to 6G.
“China did not experience a technological gap while going from 3G to 5G, which will be the same for developing 6G technology,” an unnamed industry official told the Global Times. “The U.S. has excellent information technology, but lacks core technology and industrial equipment.”
China launched the world’s first 6G test satellite in November last year to test Terahertz communication technology in space.
The 6G era utilizes Terahertz band with a communication speed of 100 times more than the 5G millimeter-wave frequency band by converging satellite and ground-based communication.
Huawei, a Chinese telecommunication equipment giant, is also developing 6G technology. Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei said it will take another 10 years for 6G technology to be used.
