Basically, the Asia-Pacific also has the same war scheme as Russia and Ukraine. China for example treats Taiwan as its belonging, it uses armed forces to intimidate Taiwan. China also reserves the right to invade Taiwan, said The Economist.
Kishida Fumio, Japan’s Prime Minister, argued that if the world allows Russia to go on with the war, Xi Jinping would do the same thing to Taiwan. Global Times, a state tabloid of China, commented that China should also receive global support when trying to eradicate the secessionist regime in Taiwan. This commentary was a response over supporting Ukraine’s territory.
Taiwan and Ukraine are highly different. In the case of America’s support for instance, Ukraine is America’s 67th biggest trading partner. Taiwan on the other hand, is America’s ninth biggest trading partner. Taiwan sits at the heart of global supply chains. Moreover, United States values Taiwan as an alternative political model to the Communist-run mainland. America had given weaponry support for Taiwan to gain its independence.
Taiwan is central to western pacific “first island chain”. Tsai-Ing-wen urges the differences between his country and Ukraine. If there were disruptions in Taiwan, America would respond swiftly. Lo Chih-cheng, head of ruling party’s foreign affairs division, added that Ukraine now might distract America’s attention. So, it gives China some times to make military mischief.
To sum up, American credibility lies more over Taiwan than Ukraine. If China won over Taiwan, America would lose the security order developed since the second world war. The linkage between Russia-Ukraine and China-Taiwan is obvious. Bonnie Glaser from the German Marshall Fund adds that China is watching Russia’s strategy closely. It applies the hybrid warfare as lessons for its use to invade Taiwan.
