Lazarus, a North Korean hacking organization, reportedly hacked into the Estonian cryptocurrency company “Coinspace” and stole $37.3 million.
VOA reported on the 30th that “CoinsPaid” recently posted a statement on its website containing such information. According to the statement, CoinSpade was hacked on the 22nd and $37.3 million was stolen.
CoinSpade explained the crime, saying, “It is presumed to be the work of the Lazarus Group (North Korea), one of the most powerful hacking organizations.” Immediately after the attack, the company’s response team and international cybersecurity companies worked together to track down the background and strengthen countermeasures. He also added, “We have submitted an official report to Estonia’s law enforcement agency.”
Recently, a series of hacking attacks by North Korea targeting companies in the information technology (IT) sector, including cryptocurrency, have occurred.
Early last month, Estonia’s decentralized cryptocurrency wallet service “Atomic Wallet” was hacked by Lazarus and suffered more than 100 million dollars in damage. Jump Cloud, a U.S. information technology (IT) company, also pointed to North Korea as the reason behind the hacking.
Lazarus, a hacker organization under the North Korean Reconnaissance General Bureau, hacked Sony Pictures in the U.S. in 2014 and made its name known. In 2016, he hacked into Bangladesh’s central bank and stole $81 million. In 2017, the distribution of “Wanna Cry” ransomware caused massive damage in more than 150 countries around the world.
