Toyota Indonesia is saying that it will not resort to dismissal during the pandemic. Additionally, the company is preparing strategies to avoid work termination to the employees despite the low sales in the period.
According to Anton Jimmi Suwandy, Marketing Director at Toyota Astra Motor, Toyota currently relies on models produced in Indonesia to help its sales. He further explained that this sales decline will indirectly affect other aspects in the business too.
“The industry itself has to work hard to maintain relationships with our workers and vendors. This is an incredibly challenging task. The team at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia gives its best under this situation regarding efficiencies and so forth,” Mr. Anton explained.
He also confirmed that the sales did not meet the targets as Toyota is heavily suffering from the coronavirus pandemic. However, he stated that Toyota is not the only one suffering from it as other auto manufacturers are experiencing the same issues.
For now, what Toyota Indonesia has in mind is to keep supply and demand under control. Also, the company predicts that the sales this year will decline 40% from the one in 2019.

Toyota Indonesia: “We’ve Had It Worse Before”
Mr. Anton explained that the company had witnessed worse sales than the one during COVID-19. Accordingly, he was referring to the company’s sales in the country in 2011.
In 2011, there was a huge flood hitting Thailand. The catastrophe resulted in a heavy blow to the import from Thailand to Indonesia, disrupting the supply chains of the company.
According to data, Toyota’s sales in March this year reached only 17.787 units. During the heavy flood in Thailand, the company recorded only 16.771 units.
Despite everything, the sales in March is still shocking for Toyota Indonesia. Accordingly, the auto manufacturer failed to meet the target which sits at 20.000 units of sales.
