Jack Ma, an Alibaba Group founder, and billionaire stated that overtime work is a great blessing for young workers.
Most people argued about work-life balance and the overtime hours demanded by some companies as the sector slows after years of bad growth.
Jack Ma said to Alibaba employees, that he defended the industry’s ‘996’ work schedule. The work schedule refers to the 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. workday, six days a week.
In addition, he personally thought that being able to work is a huge or great blessing.
Ma added, “Many companies and many people don’t have the opportunity to work 996,” Ma said. “If you don’t work 996 when you are young, when can you ever work 996?”
The issue has reached an online debate and protests on some platforms. Most workers have discussed examples of excessive overtime demands at some companies.
Furthermore, Jack MA said that young workers should regularly work for long hours to make their life better.
He also said that we have to put out more time and energy to achieve the success that we want.
Ma referred to the tech industry today. Many people are without jobs, or working at companies in search of revenue or facing closure.
He said that he still feels lucky because he could work up to 12 hours per day so that he could get a very great achievement in his life.
There was an opinion piece published in a state newspaper argued that 996 violated China’s Labor Law, which stipulates that average work hours cannot exceed 40 hours a week.
The unnamed author wrote in the People’s Daily, stated that creating a corporate culture of ‘encouraged overtime’ will not only not help a business’ core competitiveness. It might inhibit and damage a company’s ability to innovate.
