On August 20, 2020, Gmail, Google Drive and Meet, and other online services appeared to have stopped working. It happened for millions of users.
Google’s key apps, aside from its search engine, Gmail, Google Drive, and Meet went off-line during August, to the annoyance of millions of users. So what was the reason?
Google has not been forthcoming with the reason, according to The Independent. The technology giant said that it was aware its users were having problems. And then, it was working to understand the cause of the outage.
The company also emphasized that the issue was not worldwide, with not all of the services being entirely broken.
Apart from Drive and Gmail, several other Google services. For instance, Meet, Chat, Docs, Groups, Sites, Slides, Voice, and Keep were all experiencing failures. The users either unable to access or unable to perform daily tasks such as downloading slides.
According to Ed Macnair, CEO of Censornet: “Particularly in the light of recent events, tools such as Gmail, Slack, and Meet have become even more crucial for organizations. In addition, it aims to communicate and collaborate effectively. When these remote working tools fail, productivity often grinds to a halt which can cause a direct financial cost to the business.”
Macnair goes on to focus on Digital Journal: “The main component to maintain efficiency is to keep email open. It’s the lifeblood of many organizations, and delivering an emergency inbox to customers, disconnected from the main network, can be a critical lifeline.
