According to a report from research firm Gartner, approximately 295 million smartphones were sold worldwide in the second quarter of 2020.
The figure highlights the coronavirus’ unparalleled effects, which resulted in a revenue decline of 20.4 percent compared to the same time in 2019. All manufacturers in the sector were badly affected with the notable exception of Apple.
There were 294.6 million smartphones sold worldwide between April and June 2020, comparing to 370.2 million a year earlier. Samsung remains a market leader, with Huawei closely trailing.
At a time when most manufacturers were facing a dramatic decline in revenue, Apple was able to defy the trend with a decrease of just 0.4 percent.
The trend can be explained by the launch of the iPhone SE in April, which is the brand’s most affordable edition, and the progressive reopening of stores in China where the iPhone remains extremely popular.
The second-quarter downturn follows an extraordinary drop in the first three months of 2020 that saw revenues dropping by 20.2%.
