Eric Yuan has taken the position as one of the richest people in the world due to the video communication application he created.
Thanks to his hard work, now Eric Yuan and his family are now in the 43rd position of the world’s richest person Forbes. His net worth is US $ 22.1 billion.
However, success was not achieved by instant. Yuan did not stop fighting for it.
Eric Yuan’s Life
Yuan took major in mathematics and computer science at the Shandong University of Science & Technology, 22-year-old Yuan is married.
Inspired by the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, Yuan believes he can set up his own company. Even though obstacles always confronted him, he never stopped having dreams.
Moreover, in a period of one and a half years, he had 7 times experienced rejection in his visa application.
“I said to myself, OK, great. I will do everything I can, until you tell me that I can never come here again. If not, I will not stop,” he said as quoted by Forbes.
Yuan joins Webex
In 1997, Yuan joined the two-year-old Webex, based in Milpitas, California. Webex went public in July 2000 and was acquired by Cisco for US $ 3.2 billion in 2007. It was not long before Cisco appointed Yuan to lead the Webex engineering group.
However, in 2010 Yuan was not happy because the service is not that great. Every time its user logs into the Webex service, the company’s system must identify the product, whether iPhone, Android, PC or Mac which is making things slow.
“Someday someone will build something in the cloud, and it will kill me,” Yuan told Bill Tai, a venture investor who became Zoom’s first supporter.
Cisco rejects Yuan’s suggestion
After a year of ‘harassing’ his boss to allow him to rebuild the Webex, Yuan gave up and decided to leave Cisco in 2011.
“Cisco is more focused on social networking, trying to make the company Facebook. Cisco made a mistake. Three years after I left, they realized what I said was true, “he continued.”
Long story short, after that Yuan built the Zoom application. The application continued to grow after getting a lot of fundraising.
