Super Mario Bros 3 broke the record for the most expensive game ever, when a 1990-game cassette sold for $156,000 at an auction last Friday.
The auction included 20 bidders and bids started at $ 62,500. The NES game easily beat the previous record-holder, Super Mario Bros, which sold for $114,000 in July 2020, according to the The Verge.
Factors that cause Super Mario Bros 3 to become the most expensive game
First, the relatively rare box design, which reads “Bros”. It is formatted to the left on the front which slightly obscures Mario’s hand.
However, this rare design only explains part of the price as one of these variants went on sale at the auction house in July for just $ 38,400.
The game is rated Wata 9.2 A + for its condition, meaning box quality and original seal quality. Meanwhile, the previous version had a slightly lower rating of Wata 9.0 A.
Next to Super Mario Bros. 3, the sealed copy of Pokémon Red became the most expensive Pokémon game sold when it was purchased for $ 84,000 at Friday’s auction.
Heritage Auctions didn’t mention if there’s anything unique about this particular version. But it appears to have sold in excellent condition, with a Wata rating of 9.8 A ++.
Previously, the United States’ largest art auction house, Heritage Auctions, managed to sell a rare Super Mario cassette to an anonymous for $144,000
The rare Super Mario cassette was first released in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System console game that was popular at the time.
According to an official statement from Heritage Auctions, Tuesday (14/7), the bid for the Super Mario cassette has broken the record for the most expensive video game sales.
The sales figure surpassed another copy of the Super Mario video game for $100,150 in February 2019.
The reason the Super Mario tapes are so expensive is because the boxes used to wrap the tapes are made of shrink wrap plastic. This plastic is made of polymer plastic film.
