The Queen’s Gambit series, which was released on Netflix starting October 23, is said to have contributed to increasing chess sales on online shopping sites.
Online auction site eBay revealed that searches for chess board games on the site increased 273 percent in the first 10 days since The Queen’s Gambit was released.
UK eBay Toy Category Manager, Nouman Qureshi, explained that the increase in sales was also influenced by the lockdown amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, the UK region is indeed undergoing volume two of lockdown.
“We saw buyers turning to more traditional forms of entertainment during the lockdown of this second volume. Including the increase (in chess sales), “said Qureshi.
He continued jokingly, “If things continue like this (many buy chess), maybe we will all become professional (chess players) on December 2.”
The Queen’s Gambit series adapted from the novel
The Queen’s Gambit itself is a series adaptation of the novel with the same title by Walter Tevis. The novel was first published in 1983 and re-released in 2003.
The novel tells the story of a girl named Beth Harmon who grows up to be a skilled chess player in the 1960s.
However, Beth’s life has not always been smooth sailing, not as good as others have seen. He is an alcoholic and drug addict.
In the series, the character Beth Harmon is played by Anya Taylor-Joy. He is shown learning chess when he was 8 years old from an officer at the orphanage where he lives, William Scheibel.
During his stay in the orphanage, he was accustomed to taking sedatives. After taking the drug, he could imagine playing chess. Over time, he was addicted to sedatives.
From studying in the basement at an orphanage, Harmon started participating in chess competitions, both local and international.
