OnePlus’ co-founder, Carl Pei, gave a little sneak peek on his upcoming company. Pei mentioned to have raised millions in dollars before Series A funding. What could his new business be?
Longing for a vacation, starts a new business out of boredom instead
Pei confessed that his new project was unplanned. The former face of OnePlus said that he was longing for a vacation for half a year to travel the world after his departure from the company back in October. However, his idle life made him restless. Pei soon ditched his luxury holiday plan for a new business.
His journey in starting the new company started in Sweden. Pei believes he would find a great startup company, as the country is also home for several technology unicorn companies. “I started catching up with a few friends and they kept introducing me to other people so very quickly I got to know the community, and I had a lot of questions about how to start a company,” Pei told Wired.
So, what exactly is the new business that Pei have? While Pei refused to reveal much about the plan, the former public face of OnePlus mentioned that there will be multiple pieces of hardware coming in 2021. Though he won’t affirm what’s in the future, Pei did hinted that the new business might be related to headphones. Pei further continued that he aims for a broader focus than that and that it will be “so much more than that.”
Millions of dollars raised, will this guarantee success to Carl Pei and his new company?
Even though nothing is currently confirmed, Pei managed to gather people’s attention to his new business. Wired reported that Pei has accumulated notable seed investors and raised $7 million even before Series A funding started. Amongst them are Apple‘s former Apple vice president Tony Fadell, CEO and co-founder of Reddit Steve Huffman, Twitch’s co-founder Kevin Line, and many more.
While Pei’s new company might be up for a good start, he is concerned over its longevity. “There’s a lot of flash-in-the-pan companies who no longer exist that were really hyped up for a couple of years in the media and then went into oblivion. I hope that we can build something that’s sustainable. I think that will be the ultimate test,” he said.
