Not only producing smartphones, Apple Inc is also ambitious to produce self-driving car. This self-driving car is planned to be produced in 2024 including its own battery technology. This plan is part of Project Titan.
Apple believes it can carry out this plan after recruiting Doug Field, who worked at Tesla Inc, to oversee the project in 2018.
At the heart of this high-end car is a new battery design that can ‘radically’ reduce battery costs and make the car more affordable, said the source other.
The challenge of making your own vehicle is in the supply chain. It took Tesla and Elon Musk 17 years before the end of producing a profitable car for the company. Apple itself is still new to this business.
“If there’s one company on the planet that has the resources to do it, it’s probably Apple. But at the same time, it’s not a cell phone,” said someone who worked on Project Titan, quoted from Reuters, Tuesday (12/22/2020).
There is still a potential for production delays due to Covid-19.
Regarding who will assemble this Apple-branded car, there is no clarity from the news. However, other sources say they expect Apple to rely on its current manufacturing partners to build vehicles.
Two people with knowledge of Apple’s plans revealed that there was a potential delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic so that production would begin in 2025 or the following years.
Apple cars may feature multiple lidar sensors for scanning different distances. Some of the sensors can be derived from Apple’s in-house lidar unit. Apple iPhone 12 Pro and iPad Pro models released this year feature a lidar sensor.
Apple has previously been involved with Magna International Inc in making automobiles, but these talks have not subsided because Apple has become upset, said a source familiar with the plan.
Until this news was revealed, Apple and Magna declined to comment and explain.
