Apple is said to be developing a virtual reality headset. If things go according to the plan, Apple might launch the VR headset in 2022. Though, some are still sceptical at the realization of the VR headset, knowing Apple’s habit of scrapping some of their plans in the middle of the way.
Apple challenges VR headset development
Apple is going extra miles for the new VR headset. The technology will include a self-built-in processor and power supply. A chip that performs better than the M1 Apple Silicon processor is also planned to be featured in the CR headset. Just as the name implies, the headset will focus on virtual reality. Though, Apple plans to include some augmented reality features in a limited capacity in the headset as well. With how Apple is planning thoroughly on the new headset development, Tech Crunch predicts the price to exceed most competing products at around $1,000 or more.
The new VR headset development diverts a little bit from prior reports spilling Apple’s first intention to pursue consumer AR smart glasses. Bloomberg‘s report revealed that the VR headset is at the late prototype stage of development already. Meanwhile, the AR glasses are still stuck in the earlier design process. It might take one or more years until we can take a peek at the project’s result.
The report further teases the size of the headset. Roughly, it could be similar to Oculus Quest, though a fabric exterior might reduce the weight. The external cameras are also helpful for environment and hand tracking, which will most likely debut on its own App Store specifically designed for VR content.
Apple seems to be aiming at creating a high-performing high-tech with high-price. This signs that Apple will sell the new technology in a limited number. The limited sale will further begin efficiencies development to optimize production costs for more mass-market devices in the future.
Will Apple really go through with the project?
Bloomberg is still sceptical on whether or not we can see the final product of the VR headset. Apple is known for scrapping a lot of its projects in the middle of the way. This also happens on time-consuming, and even capital investment-related developments. Apple might even come with a plot twist and launches the AR glasses first despite being in the latter part of the development.
