Canva announced on Monday to have acquired Kaleido and Smartmockups. The acquisition of both companies will help Canva in coming up with more innovative visual designs and bring even more magic to its users’ designs.
Neither company disclosed the price nor terms for the acquisition. Though, Tech Crunch noted running speculations are saying that it may took nearly nine figures.
Canva and Smartmockups, realizing design in a snap
Smartmockups have been serving easy yet realistic mockups for its users since 2016. Almost five years since its launch, smatrmockups is now one of the biggest libraries. Smartmockups can create more than 6,000 types of mockups from t-shirts, books, flyers, and others. According to Canva, Smartmockups generate more than 3 million mockups in 2020 alone. With the acquisition of Smartmockups, every Canva user can now create mockups of their designs made through the platform.

Along with the announcement of Smartmockups acquisition, Canva also revealed the acquisition of Kaleido. Started in 2019, Kaleido offers a quick and easy way to remove background from images. The platform easily took a hit. Kaleido is the perfect shortcut for people who needs a quick background remove among people, and even designers. Canva and Kaleido’s affiliation is expected to unlock more opportunities for innovative design brought by AI tools.
Quoted from Tech Crunch, CEO and co-founder of Kaleido, Benjamin Groessing told press that “we completely bootstrapped Kaleido with no investors involved from day one.” “It has just been two founders and an incredible team. We’ve been profitable from the start — so this acquisition wasn’t essential for our existence. It just made sense on so many levels,” Benjamin continued.
