Microsoft Corp. is reportedly in the discussion stage to acquire Discord Inc, a video game community chat application, for more than $10 billion.
One of the sources said Discord has spoken with potential buyers, and discussions of US tech giant Microsoft are ongoing. Even Microsoft Xbox Chief Phil Spencer has spoken with the company, according to one person.
There is no agreement in the near future
However, there is not necessarily an agreement in the near future. Pitchbook data shows that Discord raised US $ 100 million last year and its valuation has reached US $ 7 billion.
Another source said Discord preferred to list its initial shares (IPO) on the stock exchange rather than selling shares to other companies. Until we hear this news, Microsoft and Discord declined to comment.
San Francisco-based Discord is known for its free service that allows gamers to communicate via video, voice and text. The popularity of this application has surged since the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced many people to move indoors.
Microsoft itself is reportedly serious about getting into the social media business. Last year, Microsoft intended to annex TikTok from the United States and a number of countries. However, this plan failed. Moreover, Microsoft has captured the Pinterest application, a competitor of Instagram.
