In the mid-1990s, just before the dot-com trend, Mark Cuban was approached by his friend Todd Wagner. He offers an internet-based audio steaming business idea. According to Wagner, the business will be profitable.
With both a passion for sports as a background, in 1995 Wagner and Cuban created AudioNet as an audio-based sports stream, which later became Broadcast.com. At that time, the internet was such a new concept to most people that Cuban and Wagner faced a lot of criticism and even considered it crazy.
“When I tell people about his vision, they will say, ‘You are crazy. I will turn on my TV. I will just turn on the radio,” Cuban said quoted by CNBC, Monday (5/4/2021).
Cuban Believes His Business Will Be Strong
But the criticism is okay with Mark Cuban. He believed his business would be strong and profitable. Cuban also firmly believes that online streaming can replace television. This belief is supported by seeing the need for computers which are expected to continue to strengthen.
After the founders started marketing, Cuban saw an increasing demand from those wanting to listen to sports or music matches during their workday.
“I saw very quickly that user adoption was huge,” Cuban said.
Until then Broadcast.com’s capabilities increased by adding video access. The addition also adds to the company’s huge profits.
“I know that anyone who wants to watch or listen to the Mavericks game, I have the best way to go, said Cuban.
In 1999, Broadcast.com was acquired by Yahoo for US $ 5.7 billion in stock. The experience made Mark Cuban think even more. open up and trust their guts to invest in the company or come up with an idea that others might think is crazy.
