Cybercriminals attack again. This time, McDonald’s became the next victim of a data breach. The cybercriminals exposed some of the customer and employee information in two regions: South Korea and Taiwan.
Helped by external consultants, McDonald’s managed to find out details of the data breach in the two regions. According to the investigation, unauthorized activity on the company’s network could have caused the data breach.
Fortunately, McDonald’s soon gave an update that the issue has been resolved. Through a statement, McDonald’s said, “While we were able to close off access quickly after identification, our investigation has determined that a small number of files were accessed, some of which contained personal data,” Reuters quotes.
Following the data breach, the fast-food company will be taking further steps on the people affected. The leaked files had information on several regulators and customers. Customers’ payment information, on the other hand, is safe from a data breach, McDonald’s said.
Cybercriminals have been attacking hospitals and global companies. Among them are meat processor JBS and Colonial Pipeline oil. The cyberattacks caused both companies to halt operations for hours. The issue led to worries of supply shortages.
Due to the cybercrime attacks, some companies had no other choice but to resort to paying ransoms. Companies regained control of their operations and were able to resume production only after paying the ransoms.
According to Reuters, McDonald’s will be using the findings from the investigations to find ways in tightening its security measures.
