Facebook is taking its e-commerce feature “Shops” to its messaging app, WhatsApp. The feature, however, is still in the trial phase. Thus, Shops are currently only available in several countries and to Facebook Marketplace in the United States.
Knowing more about “Shops”
During Facebook’s last earnings release, Zuckerberg mentioned to be putting e-commerce as one of the company’s three key areas of focus. The other two areas mentioned by Facebook include augmented and virtual reality and helping content creators earn money on Facebook’s platforms.
As a part of Facebook’s attempt to push into e-commerce, the company launched Shops just a year ago. Shops give users easier access to find and buy products from Facebook and Instagram.
Noted from Reuters, Facebook recorded over 300 million monthly Shops visitors to date. The platform also homes about 1.2 million monthly active shops.
What’s coming from “Shops”
The company announced the trial of the “Shops” feature on Tuesday, along with an announcement of some changes in its commerce tools.
Along with the announcement, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg also revealed the plan to introduce personalized ads in its Shops service based on users’ shopping behaviour.
Following the trial for Shops, Facebook is also trying to test its “visual search” artificial intelligence tool. The tool could help users to recognize similar products seen on Instagram that are available in Shops. Other than contents found in the app, users can also find products base on photos on their own camera rolls.
During a live audio room on Facebook, Zuckerberg also teased on the new augmented reality technology currently under development. The technology under development will allow shoppers to try on items online. This includes products shown through ads.
