Tesla has decided to recall 285,000 vehicles in China due to software defects, AFP reported.
China’s General Administration of Market Supervision and Management reportedly announced in a notice yesterday that Tesla is conducting a “remote recall.”
Tesla plans to contact the owner and update the software remotely without recovering the affected vehicle.
This measure is due to the recent discovery of problems with the Cruise Control system of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
Cruise control is a driving aid that automatically adjusts and maintains the vehicle speed the same as the surrounding vehicle.
China’s National Bureau of Market Supervision and Management believes that if the driver turns on the cruise control function easily by mistake, the vehicle could suddenly accelerate and cause a crash at its worst.
Tesla’s vehicle has recently been investigated by local authorities due to a series of crashes in China, and Chinese consumers’ complaints about vehicle quality and service have spread on social media.
In April, anti-Tesla sentiment escalated, with local customers protesting against brake failures at the Shanghai Motor Show.
Tesla shares fell nearly 8 percent on news of a “remote recall” in China.
