Xiaomi has a new ambition after passing Apple to become the second largest smartphone maker. The Chinese company is targeting to be able to take over the first position which is now occupied by Samsung.
Xiaomi’s second-place finish was revealed in the latest Canalys report, with 17 percent of smartphone shipments worldwide in Q2 2021. The company is just 2% off Samsung at the top of the list.
Meanwhile compared to the same period in 2020, Xiaomi smartphone shipments jumped by more than 80%.
Only this time Xiaomi came in second place for the Canalys report. Lei Jun, founder and CEO, said the result was an important milestone in the company’s history and ensures it can maintain its current position.
“Despite the celebrations now, I want to make sure we can maintain our second place steadily and firmly in the future,” he said.
Xiaomi intends to replace Samsung
But according to Canalys research manager, Ben Stanton, Xiaomi has been eyeing a new target. Namely shifting Samsung from the top of the leadership.
“All vendors are fighting hard to secure the supply of components in the midst of global scarcity. But Xiaomi has been eyeing the next prize: Replace Samsung to become the largest vendor in the world,” said Stanton quoted by CNNInternational, Friday (23/7/2021).
Stanton reveals Xiaomi is growing its overseas business fast. Canalys reports shipments in Latin America increased by more than 300%, Africa 150%, Western Europe 50%.
Xiaomi is also still targeting consumers who think about budgets, he said. When compared to Samsung and Apple, the selling price of Xiaomi phones is still much cheaper at around 40% and 75%, respectively.
In addition, the improving global economy is also a driving force for companies. For example the launch of a vaccine that brought a number of countries closer to normalcy and people who came back spent even more money.
Stanton expects Xiaomi’s top priority this year to sell more high-end devices like the Mi 11 Ultra difficult because other Chinese companies, Oppo and Vivo have the same goal.
“But it will be a tough battle,” he said.
