Google, which has been installing Qualcomm’s chips on its smartphones, is going to produce its own chips.
According to CNBC on the third, Google plans to manufacture chips called ‘Google Tensor’ and install them on its new smartphone Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, which are scheduled to be released in October.
This is another example of Big Tech companies trying to reduce their dependence on external semiconductor companies and manufacture their own chips, CNBC reported.
Earlier in November last year, Apple introduced new products such as laptop MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and small desktop MacMini that have its own ‘M1’ chip instead of existing Intel chips.
Google’s new chip Google Tensor, like Apple, is based on the design of British semiconductor design company ARM, is said to improve smartphone’s photo and video processing capabilities and support translation functions.
CNBC also reported that it can run artificial intelligence (AI) applications as well as CPU, GPU, image signal processors.
CNBC said that new smartphones, which have focused on price competitiveness of pixel phones rather than high-end smartphones, are also a kind of strategic change, adding that Google is trying to compete directly with Apple and Samsung in the flagship smartphone market.
