Tiktok just got the latest title. According to a Nikkei report, the short video platform (TikTok) is the most downloaded application in the world.
This achievement surpassed many other social media, such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Facebook is also known to hold the title as the most downloaded application until 2021, quoted from the Phone Arena, Monday (9/8/2021).
Facebook had to settle for second in the report. Tiktok also outperformed other Facebook subsidiaries, namely WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, which were ranked third, fourth and fifth.
TikTok Succeeds in US
Phone Arena noted last year didn’t think TikTok would make it in the US. After President Donald Trump threatened to remove the application from the country due to national security risks.
But finally President Joe Biden lifted all bans on Tiktok and WeChat, the Chinese messaging app that Trump had previously targeted.
Nikkei Asia reports the pandemic provided the biggest boost to Tiktok’s popularity. Not only the activities of the world community at home and limited entertainment facilities, but also many artists who cancel shows and tours and decide to enter platforms including Tiktok instead.
Tiktok is known to start a new video style trend. Then the concept was picked up by several other social media apps over the last few years.
Tiktok takes a much different approach even to other video sharing apps like Youtube. The Chinese platform has an average of nine to 15 seconds, although Tiktok has increased the maximum duration to three minutes in July.
At first, most of the videos on Tiktok were short and funny clips. Much like what the Vine platform did, which was at its peak in 2014 and then forgotten.
Even so, Tiktok is not showing any signs of dying anytime soon. It’s even more developed with clips such as education, life hacks, and cooking tutorials.
The popularity of Tiktok has even inspired other platforms to emulate it. There are Reels from Instagram and Shorts on Youtube which have just been released.
Both features are short video services in addition to the main platform. Can be a refresher for regular content used by influencers.
