The world has not that many number of supercomputer. Yet they are very much important. Of all the hundreds of supercomputers around the world, Lenovo sits at the top brand for two years straight.
Supercomputer is system with high level of performances. It is commonly used in research. Most on quantum mechanics, weather forecast, climate research, oil and gas exploration, molecular modeling, and physical simulations.
Lenovo, the king of supercomputer
Lenovo has 173 supercomputer systems according to the Top500 brands. It is 56 more systems than the previous year when it sat at the top for the first time. The 173 systems count for 35% of the world’s supercomputer systems. Apart from the supercomputer, the Chinese brand also leads the sale of the world’s PC.
Behind Lenovo, other two Chinese computer markets dominate the list. Inspur (formerly Langchao) is at the second place with 71 systems. Then Sugon at the third place with 63 systems.
China has the most, but not the best
China still dominates the market for supercomputers. Out of 500 systems, China has 219 entities around the world. United States has 116 systems and Japan has 29 systems.
But speaking of the top performance, China is still behind. With only half the number of China’s total entities, US leads as the best of overall capacity It counts 38.4% of the aggregate list performance. China is at the second place with 29.9%.
US also holds the title of supercomputer with the best performance with Summit. It delivered a record of 148.6 petaflops. Which means it delivers 148.6 thousand trillion operations per second. The Sierra system followed with 94.6 petaflops.
Meanwhile China’s Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer is at the third position with 93.0 petaflops. It is installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, China.
China is also one of the world’s biggest market for supercomputer. Lenovo itself has 74 systems operating in its home country.
