TSMC, the world’s largest foundry (semiconductor consignment production) company, is reportedly considering establishing a 1-nano (nm, 1 billionth of a meter) plant in Taichung, central Taiwan.
Citing sources, Taiwanese media, reported on the 27th that “TSMC is likely to change the factory site secured under the ‘Second Development Plan for the Expansion of Taichung District of Central Science Complex’ promoted by the Central Science Complex Management Bureau to a 1-nano process.”
TSMC plans to change its construction plant in central Taichung from 2-nano process to 1-nano process because it decided to invest in 2-nano plant in southern Kaohsiung on the 8th, reducing the need to build 2-nano process in both northern New and central Taichung. Earlier, TSMC planned to invest T$800 billion to T$1 trillion in the central science complex to build four semiconductor production plants. However, due to the delay in securing the site of the Taichung plant, the 2-nano process was converted to the Kaohsiung plant, and 800 people, including 15B fab (semiconductor production plant) in the central science complex and 18A fab in the southern science complex, were also transferred. TSMC reportedly submitted a research and development and mass production plan for 2 nanometers or less technology to the Shinju Science Park Management Bureau, which has jurisdiction over the northern Taoyuan Longtan Science Park, on the district site (158.59ha).
Meanwhile, the Taichung City Urban Planning Committee on the 25th deliberated and passed the second expansion construction development plan submitted by the Central Science Complex Management Bureau in March. Until now, the construction of TSMC-related sites has been delayed due to concerns over the lack of living water and electricity supply in Taichung City due to the construction of the factory.
