Google Cloud announced the launch of ‘Google Open Titan’, which is the first open-source silicon RT (Root of Trust) project.
According to Google, this project is designed to create transparent, high-quality reference designs and integrated guidelines for silicon ROT chips. For its management, LowRISC CIC (ETH Zurich), a non-profit company in Cambridge, and ETH Zurich, G+D Mobile Security, Google involved.
The silicon ROT chips support security on a variety of devices. Including server motherboards, network cards, client devices, commercial routers, and IoT devices. Hardware chips increase infrastructure integrity through silicon ROT chips. Accordingly, it uses approved and verifiable codes to verify that critical system components boot safely.
Now, Google is using its customized ROT chip Titan that helps devices’ data center boot from a trusted state with a certified code. Accordingly, the company stated it has launched the Open Titan project to recognize the importance of reliable silicon chips through Titan which has served as its ROT. And to publicize to the industry the benefits of stable silicon RT chips with its partners.
The three core principles underlying the Open Titan project are transparency, flexibility, and quality
When people participate in an Open Titan project, they can inspect and evaluate their design and documentation. Previously, Google explained that the Open Titan project allows the development of high-quality, secure silicon chip design. This includes reference firmware, verification data, and technical documents. And it can save costs as well as design that is beyond specific vendors or platforms.
“While new technologies such as IoT (Internet of Things) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) innovate business at an alarming rate, security problems that arise are a challenge that everyone has to solve together.. Google Cloud will join this journey and actively support all customers and industries in establishing a safer business environment.”
-Dominic Rizzo, general manager of Google Cloud Open Titan Project.
Apart from Google Cloud, this year Google launched many new projects. Such as game subscription project and the upcoming smartphone, Google Pixel 4.
