The elevating popularity of ride-hailing giant Gojek and Grab in Indonesia finally attracts the attention of the government. In the near future, both giant start-ups will be featured in the country’s economy.
Of those, due to the ride-hailing giants’ massive economic sizes, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) will incorporate the prices of the services to the country’s inflation calculation. To be more specific, the agency will incorporate the price into consumer’s price index (CPI).
“There are 98 new commodities, such as cellphone accessories and Grab and Gojek prices (incorporated in the CPI). These components are growing significantly and have substantial economic activities,” said BPS Head Suhariyanto.
Due to the new policy, the head stated that comparing December and January’s inflation rates are not apple-to-apple. Accordingly, the country’s inflation rates are 2.72% in December and 2.68% in January.
“But it did not significantly affect this year’s inflation rate compared to the previous years,” he added.

Service Prices of Gojek and Grab will Increase in Indonesia, at least in Jakarta
The Ministry of Transportation is currently reviewing the proposal for an increase in tariffs for Gojek and Grab in Indonesia, at the very least in Jakarta and nearby cities.
“This is the result of last week’s meetings, pertaining to a request of an increase in service prices by the driver association,” said a government official.
Regarding the result of the meetings, the government did not disclose the potential new tariffs to public. Accordingly, the consideration to the increase was due to the escalation of national healthcare’s service prices.
In response to the issue, the driver association makes three requests. Of those, they hope that there will be no increase in tariffs. However, if the government wants to regulate it, they wish that it will not be more than 10%.
Accordingly, they have to consider customers’ willingness to pay (WTP) and ability to pay (ATP). They are concerned that the new regulation will lessen the number of the ride-hailing customers in the country.
