Qualcomm unveiled its third-generation modem chip called ‘Snapdragon X60’. Armed with the new 5G mobile communication technology, Qualcomm unveils the new chip on Wednesday.
The Snapdragon X60 is the world’s first to adopt the 5nm (nanometer) technology in a 5G baseband. Specifically, it has the purpose to support both TDD (Time Division Duplexing) and FDD (Frequency Division Duplexing) at frequencies below 6GHz (gigahertz) and millimeter wave (mmWave).
Millimeter waves refer to electromagnetic waves with frequencies above 6.0 GHz (gigahertz). With wavelengths ranging from 1 to 10 mm and frequencies from 30,000 to 300,000 MHz (megahertz). It is common for telecommunications and radar equipment as it enables broadband transmission with radio waves that are very close to light. And it is also the key to 5G technology.
Specification of Snapdragon X60 5G
The Snapdragon X60 5G Modem and Antena solution improves the average speed of 5G supported by handsets. While also improving performance and capacity for carriers around the world.
The product also comes with a new Qualcomm QTM535-millimeter wave antenna module. This ensures good millimeter wave performance. The compact design is also an advantage.
Snapdragon X60 5G modem and antenna solution supports up to 7.5Gbps (gigabitess) download speeds per second. And up to 3Gbps upload speeds per second.
Qualcomm will ship prototypes of the Snapdragon X60 and QTM 535 starting in the first quarter of this year. While there will be introduction of new premium smartphones with new modem-RF systems at the first quarter of 2021.
“Qualcom Technology is at the center of 5G with telecommunication companies and manufacturers. And is introducing 5G services and mobile devices at unprecedented speed,” said Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon.
Qualcomm will ship prototypes of the Snapdragon X60 and QTM535 starting in the first quarter of 2020. The flagship smartphone, equipped with a new Qualcomm chip that implements optical cable-level Internet speed and low flexibility in 5G, is scheduled to debut in the first quarter of 2021. According to Reuters, Samsung Electronics wins contract for Snapdragon X60 supplies.
