Sony Corp. from Japan, which held a zero percent share in the global smartphone market last year, unveiled its first 5G flagship model, Xperia 1 II. It features enhanced camera functions and will be released in global markets after this spring.
According to the Verge, it is the first time Sony launch another flagship smartphone after the last super-tall Xperia 1. The new 5G smartphone is tentatively named X Peria 1 II.
Equipped with 6.5-inch 4K HDR display, Xperia 1 II is Sony’s first 5G handset. It has strengthened camera functions based on 5G that enables high-speed and large-capacity mobile communication.
However, Sony will reportedly only have 12MP camera on the back of its smartphone. In the era of 108MP camera such as Samsung Galaxy S20 series, this is a major setback. But Sony has some tricks to improve its camera capability.
Sony’s expertise in camera sensors is the answer. With some settings for professional cameras also subject to adjustable triple lenses and HDR technology that makes images on the screen more realistic. Japanese media reported that Xperia 1 II included a triple camera with a ZEISS lens. And a high-speed speaker function of up to 20 frames per second.
Xperia 1 II 5G: Sony mobile’s breakthrough after a long drought
Coming with three different colors which are black, purple and white, Sony Xperia 1 II will be available this spring. This will be a major turnaround in Sony’s mobile business sector, which has been sluggish the past few years. According to the Global Association of Mobile Telecommunications Operators, 5G will cover 15% of the world’s mobile networks in 2020.
However, Sony’s mobile business performance is not good. According to Sony’s quarterly results released in December last year, sales of mobile phones have decreased by 16 percent compared to the previous year. Its global market share also stood at 0.3 percent, far behind Samsung Electronics, Apple and Huawei.
