Tesla CEO Elon Musk has asked McDonald’s, a global fast food chain, to allow cryptocurrency Dogecoin as a means of payment.
Musk wrote on his Twitter account on the 25th local time, “I will eat a happy meal on tv if @McDonalds accepts Dogecoin”
Citing Coin Market Cap, a virtual currency information site, the economic media Market Insider said Dogecoin prices jumped 8% to $0.1445 shortly after Musk’s tweet.
Earlier, Musk has defended Dogecoin as a mean of paying for products, and Tesla has allowed Dogecoin payments for accessory products sold at online shops since the middle of this month.
Meanwhile, prior to Musk’s tweet, Dogecoin co-developer Billy Marcus posted on McDonald’s Twitter account last week that he wanted to eat French fries, and McDonald’s responded with the image of a Dogecoin mascot, Shiba dog biting French fries.
Dogecoin is the most popular “Meme” (a photo or video made by imitating buzzwords and behaviors on the Internet) cryptocurrency in terms of market capitalization. Meme coin is characterized by its strong theme and severe surge due to the influence of famous investors or communities.
