Chinese smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, led the India market, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, last year.
Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on the 4th that Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo led the Indian market last year, citing a report by market research firm Counterpoint.
According to a report by Counterpoint, four out of five companies ranked first to fifth in the Indian smartphone market last year were Chinese companies.
According to the share of smartphones by suppliers in the India market last year, China’s Xiaomi maintained its No. 1 position with 24%, followed by Korea’s Samsung Electronics with 18%.
Last year, Xiaomi and Samsung Electronics’ share in the India market fell 2 percentage points and 3 percentage points, respectively, compared to 2020.
China’s Vivo followed with a 15% market share, while Oppo’s sub-brands Realme and Oppo ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
The strong dominance of Chinese companies in the Indian smartphone market is drawing attention as it comes from a situation where India and China are at odds over border disputes.
Indian authorities are checking Chinese technology companies for security reasons.
Earlier last month, India’s Ministry of Finance notified Xiaomi of the collection of 6.53 billion rupees in import tariffs, saying it avoided some taxes on its Indian subsidiary.
Indian authorities are also banning the use of apps by 59 Chinese companies, including TikTok, Tencent Group’s social network service platform WeChat, and Alibaba Group’s UC browser, because “Chinese apps violated India’s sovereignty, security, and public order.”
In addition, the report said that smartphone sales revenue and shipments in the Indian market reached an all-time high last year despite semiconductor supply difficulties.
Last year, smartphone revenue in the Indian market totaled $38 billion, up 27% from 2020.
The report interpreted the reason for the growth of the Indian smartphone market as the result of financial support, publicity, and price discount policies for smartphone buyers.
