The transition process of the United States administration from President Donald Trump to his successor is unlikely to go smoothly, because he has not admitted Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.
The reason is that until now Trump still insists on being reluctant to admit defeat to Biden, which has delayed the transition process.
GSA has not signed the approval letter by Biden transition team
As reported by CNN, Tuesday (10/11), the process of transitioning the US government from the old president to his successor must wait for the approval of the Head of the US Government Public Affairs Agency (GSA), which is currently held by Emily W. Murphy.
According to protocol, Murphy should have signed a definite approval letter to disburse the budget proposed by Biden’s transition team. On the other hand, GSA will check the entire Biden transition team’s background.
However, after 48 hours had passed, Murphy never signed the letter of approval.
“The process of confirming has not yet been established,” said GSA spokeswoman Pamela Pennington in a press statement.
“There is no news yet and the position of the GSA is still the same. There is no approval process. The GSA and all government officials will continue and fulfill their statutory duties. It just like the case at the end of the Clinton administration in 2000,” said Pennington.
The same case also happened in 2000
Pennington refers to the US Presidential election counting process in 2000, between George W. Bush from the Republican Party against Al Gore from the Democratic Party.
At that time, there were allegations of fraud regarding the final vote count results. Especially in the state of Florida. However, in the final decision the winner is Bush.
Pennington states that the GSA will continue to comply with the regulations. In fact, the process of transitioning government has never taken a long time. For example in 2016, when Trump won over his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.
At that time the US government led by President Barack Obama approved the transition process a day after the announcement of the winner of the presidential election. Even in 2008 when Obama won the first time, the government transition process was approved at 01.00 local time.
The process of transitioning the US government, which is quite long, only happened once, namely in 2000. At that time the transition process was only approved a day after the recount process in Florida was completed. And the US Supreme Court issued a decision on the dispute over the presidential election.
George W. Bush states that the US election 2020 process was fair
Bush said the presidential election process in 2020 was fair and the results were clear. Even a number of Republican politicians have called Biden the elected president.
In early September, GSA signed an approval for a budget of $9.62 million. Biden transition team use this budget.
The budget will be used to finance post-election activities such as preparations for a new government, training and orientation as well as official trips.
The former Obama-era White House Communications Director who now works for Biden, Jen Psaki, urged the GSA to press the letter of approval immediately.
“After Joe Biden excels in the presidential election, we hope the GSA will approve Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as elected president and vice president,” Psaki tweeted.
