Tickets for the first passenger flight to be carried out by aerospace company Blue Origin have been auctioned for US$28 million.
The winner of the auction, whose name has not been announced, will fly to the edge of space with Blue Origin owner and billionaire Jeff Bezos, and his brother, Mark Bezos. Blue Origin said that the name of the winner will be revealed in the next few weeks.
The ticket auction for this flight started at US$4.8 million, but skyrocketed to over US$20 million after just a few minutes.
Where did the Auction Money Go?
Proceeds from the auction will be donated to Blue Origin’s non-profit organization Club for the Future. It supports children interested in a career in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) industry. and Mathematics).
Blue Origin Astronaut and Orbital Sales Director Ariane Cornell said that New Shepard’s first flight will be filled with 4 passengers, namely Jeff Bezos, his brother, the winner of the ticket auction, and 1 other passenger who will be announced later.
The first flight of the New Shepard space shuttle will be launched on 20 July. This rocket is capable of gliding up to 100 kilometers into space, and can fly autonomously.
The launch date of July 20 is also significant, as it marks the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
