Volkswagen Group United States said the case of data leakage at a vendor (Audi) has affected more than 3.3 million customer data and prospective consumers in North America.
The German company said the leaked data was information from consumers or potential customers of Audi.
Quoted from CGTN, Monday (14/6/2021), Volkswagen Group of America said third party persons were suspected of stealing limited information regarding consumers and potential Audi buyers from a vendor.
The stolen information is a collection of sales and marketing data from 2014-2019, and is in an unlocked electronic file.
The company told regulators that the stolen data consisted of only phone numbers and email addresses. In other cases, data leaks usually include information on car purchases, rentals, and consumer personal data.
Furthermore, VW stated that 90,000 consumers and potential Audi buyers affected by the data leak case. It will be offered free credit protection services.
In cases of this kind of leak, usually the theft will collect sensitive data. Such as information on vehicle plate numbers, birth dates, social security numbers, and bank accounts.
However, VW believes that this is a case of data leakage that affects its customers in Canada and the United States, it does not collect sensitive data like most cases.
