Russia has blocked access to Google news services in its own country.
Russia’s The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) announced on the 23rd (local time) that it had restricted access to Google News to block the Ukraine incident, claiming that it contained a lot of unreliable information.
The agency said in a statement, that the U.S. Internet news resources mentioned gave access to numerous publications and materials containing unreliable and openly important information about the special military operation process in Ukraine.
They added, this was done at the request of the Russian prosecutor general.
Google also confirmed the fact.
Google said in a statement, “We are having some difficulties accessing Google News apps and websites in Russia,” adding, “We have confirmed that it is not a technical problem.” He stressed, “We tried to make Russian people use information services such as news as long as possible.”
Prior to this, Russia blocked access to Twitter and from Twitter and Facebook.
Russia justified the invasion of Ukraine by calling it a “special military operation.” Recently, it has been made possible to sentence up to 15 years in prison for disseminating “false information” related to Russian military actions.
Meanwhile, earlier at the same day, French automaker Renault and a total of 37 Japanese companies all announced suspensions of operation in Russia.
