Kashmir is a Himalayan region at the border of India and Pakistan. To date, these countries are having numerous conflicts. However, the situation shifted recently.

Lately, India is planning to revoke Kashmir’s Article 370. Accordingly, Article 370 is a Indian-law stating that the region Jammu and Kashmir are able to be autonomous in their own law. Of course, this does not provide the said areas full immunity as there applies conditional terms.

At the minute, the region in Kashmir is divided into three areas. One is controlled by India, another one is controlled by Pakistan, and the other belongs to China. The region in India, however, has been under conflict for years.

Indian military forces are combating Kashmir terrorists, Jaish-e-Mohammed, residing in the Kashmir territory. The terrorist group is from Pakistan, many speculate. In addition, India suspected that Pakistan is backing up the terrorists to combat Kashmir. Pakistan, however, denies it.

Recently, as India is trying to revoke Article 370, they conducted a blackout strategy. India, furthermore, cuts off the Internet and communications in India-administered Kashmir. People have to use up old radio signals to connect to the outer world as a consequence.

People in Kashmir want to either become an independent country or join Pakistan for religious reasons. India, on the other hand, thinks of this as Pakistan’s attempts to take over the region. This limited conflict can potentially escalate to become a new war between both countries. What is worse is that both countries have nuclear arsenals.

Kashmir, a Long Battle over One Region

India and Pakistan have been fighting over Kashmir for more than 70 years. It all started even before the independence of both countries from The Great Britain.

In July 1949, long prior to today’s event, India and Pakistan signed an agreement to build a ceasefire following UN’s recommendation. As a result, the conflicted region became two areas and each is under respective countries.

During that timeline, there existed several wars between the two countries. Both countries, until this very day, do not want to give up on Kashmir.

Apart from religion, one of the reasons is because the region’s natural resources is able to supply electricity to a vast number of residents. With its great potential, it is no wonder that none is willing to give up.

Today, following India’s latest blackout strategy, Indian PM Narendra Modi stated that the new law would bring stability and end separatism, terrorism, dynastic politics, and corruption. In conducting this Internet blackout, India deployed a myriad of additional troops to the state.

As a very limited information is disclosed, there prevails some leaked information pertaining to the condition. Detentions apply to politicians, restrictions apply to journalists and human rights groups. They have no power as the international world cannot spectate.
