In July, Grab announced that they would revise the GrabRewards point system. This announcement highlights two major changes, that is:
- GrabRewards Points will no longer expire as long as you continue to use Grab services, and
- GrabRewards points earned for each expense will be reduced.
Grab users can sometimes get 20 GrabRewards points for every GrabPay transaction in the store. Unused points will have an expiration date.
GrabRewards then introduces Activity-Based Points Expiry (ABPE), which they claim that it is a new program to extend the life of your GrabRewards points.
The Points You Earn will be Less
On October 1, Grab reduced the point rate from 20 points to 9 points (for Platinum members) earned for each transaction using GrabPay in-store, for online shopping, and for adding prepaid cellular credit.
They call this the GrabPay End of Year Bonus and will run from October 1 to December 31, 2019.
GrabPay End of Year Bonus
Depending on the level of members you follow, the level of points that you will deduct will differ. For regular members and Silver Grabs, you will get 4.5 points for each transaction while Gold members get 6.75 points. In addition, Platinum members can enjoy 9 points in one transaction.
Another new change is that all members, regardless of level, can now redeem points for Grab Rides and GrabFood starting from 600 points.
Fewer Points = Smaller Cashbacks
A Facebook user named Euginn Lim calculated the difference in cashback and delivered the results in a post.
According to his calculations, when Grab still rewards users with 20 points per transaction, users will receive 16.9% cashback. With the current Grab reward system, Euginn calculates that users will also get less cashback due to reduced points in each transaction.
