North Korea rejected neighboring South Korea’s invitation for Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un to attend the South Korea-ASEAN Summit. In an official statement, North opined that the South failed to give them a reasonable excuse.
Accordingly, the invitation came directly from President Moon Jae-in on November 5. If Kim could not attend, Moon hoped that there would be an envoy to represent the country and improve North South Korea relation.
However, North’s rejection over the invitation was very regretful according to Moon. At first, Moon envisioned that both Korean leaders would host the ASEAN countries together during the summit, while at the same time promoting peace on the ideologically conflicting neighbors.
North Korea’s refusal was not without a reason. To its defense, the country thought that Seoul has violated their bilateral agreements by letting the US meddles with the affairs.
“As nothing was achieved in implementing the agreements … the north-south summit for the mere form’s sake would be pointless,” Korean Central News Agency reported.
“Not content with sustaining losses from dependence on the United States, the south side made an offer for discussing the north-south relations in the theater of multilateral cooperation. This makes us only dubious.”

Political Relationships between South and North Korea
The political relationships between neighboring South and North Korea are getting worse after becoming less conflicting several months ago. Accordingly, South Korea’s dependence on the US affects North’s views.
North Korea, accordingly, does not feel comfortable that the US positions its troops in South Korea and Japan. Kim Jong Un, for that reason, has continually discussed the situation with US President Donald Trump to no avail.
The tensions are rapidly escalating for North keeps on testing missiles near Japan and South’s territories. Apart from attempting to threaten the countries, North also demands the US to take back its troops in the region.
In response, the South attempts to have a discussion with North numerous times. Starting from forming the peace economy up to hosting the South Korea-ASEAN summit, President Moon’s invitation bears insignificant results.
