The competition of e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia is very tight. Even giant firms such as Amazon, E-bay and JD can hardly compete. Local firms such as Shopee, Lazada, and Tokopedia dominate the market.
Shopee overtakes Lazada
According to iPrice’s The Map of E-commerce, Shopee tops the average visit of the first quarter of 2019. Followed by Lazada, Tokopedia, Bukalapak and Tiki. It is based on app analytics firm App Annie, SimilarWeb, and other social media apps.
Indonesia, as the biggest country in the region gave a big impact on the list. Shopee’s rise on the list is partly thanks to increasing visit from Indonesia. And Lazada’s drop of visit in both its web and app put it on the second place.
But Lazada still dominates many countries in the region. It is the most visited e-commerce platform in Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand. While in Indonesia, the number one is Tokopedia, followed by Bukalapak, Shopee and Lazada at the 4th place.
In Vietnam, Shopee is on the top. Then Tiki, the young startup followed close in second place before Lazada. In Singapore, neither its two biggest platform on the top. Instead, Qoo10 placed first.
Monthly visit < monthly active users
However monthly visits is not everything. Monthly active users is even more important. It is an actual leverage of the activity within the app.
According to monthly active users, Lazada tops the market in Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. Meanwhile, local e-commerce platform Tokopedia still dominates Indonesia’s monthly active users.
Marketing spend impacts a lot on an e-commerce monthly visit. The number of visit in the last quarter of the year tend to be very high. This is due to many year-end discounts and events.
The high traffic on discount days can elevate a company’s number of visit. But it does not guarantee the number of transactions. Because even online, visitors like to only do window shopping than actually buying something.
