Closing the second quarter of 2019, iPrice updated its map of SEA e-commerce platforms. As the result, Shopee leads the overall market of the region. Even though it is ahead of Lazada in only 2 countries of the 6 countries on the list.
Together with App Annie, iPrice conducted the research based on three activities on the SEA e-commerce platforms. Firstly, the monthly active users of the app (MAU). Secondly, the platform with the highest number of app download. Last, the platform’s website with most visits, both through desktop and mobile browsers.
In the region, Shopee still leads at all of the three categories above the other platforms. Nothing much different compared to the previous quarter report. Meanwhile, Lazada, Tokopedia and Bukalapak follow accordingly behind it.
Indonesia, the center of SEA e-commerce platforms
Country-wise, Shopee only leads the e-commerce market in Singapore and Indonesia. Being the biggest country in the region, Indonesia’s market counts significantly above the others. Although the result says that Shopee is second to Tokopedia in the country, it is enough for it to be ahead of Lazada.
Meanwhile, Tokopedia itself could not go further than the third place. The Indonesian unicorn seems to not have any thought of going international jist yet. Bukalapak, on the other hand, has opened it’s channel to the international market a little while ago.
Shopee and Lazada’s lead in the market relate a lot to the aggressive marketing both companies did. Both, for example, has used the entertainment strategy. And the Singapore-based company also launched a new live feature. The feature allows users to watch the products through a live stream session.
