COVID-19 pandemic is bringing a lot of changes to the world. To some people, these changes led by the pandemic bring something new to their life: a new career.
A career change could be a highly risky path to take, especially during this stifling pandemic. However, the result from a survey by Indeed.com showed 27% of unemployed jobseekers said to be in search of fields switch in their careers.
Similarly, a survey conducted by Prudential’s Pulse of the American Worker showed that 25% of the respondents were trying to look for a new career after the pandemic subsides, Reuters notes. The number grows higher among millennials at 34%.
To some people, the uncertain period of isolation triggered an awakening on revised goals and opportunities in the limited lifetime. Katy Milkman, professor at The Wharton School and author of the new book “How to Change: The Science of Getting From Where You Are To Where You Want To Be”, suggests that this could be the right moment for a change.
If you are among those people and is looking for a change, here are several tips you can take upon your journey to find a new career amidst the pandemic!
Write detailed plans for your future career
Your goal won’t turn into reality with a snap of a hand. You need to be strategic and lay out plans on how to achieve those goals. Start from the most basic, simple steps then lean towards the bigger goals.
However, keep in mind to limit your goals and make them as realistic as possible. Writing unrealistic goals can only overwhelm you, and you might end up with none achieved. Reuters suggests identifying one goal as the major priority. Then, define what you need to do to realize it into action steps.
Start fresh! Change your routines
Use the stay-at-home period to improve yourself. How? By breaking your old habits, and starting positive routines. Research shows, Reuters notes, that people are great at creating change in fresh environments. An example of this is moving to a new home or transferring to a new workplace.
If you spent less than 14 months in your old office, you might not have the old habits yet, Milkman says. This means you have all the opportunities to create new routines, all new from scratch!
Pandemic is tiring, positive vibes only, please!
Another point that Milkman suggests is to “surround yourself with peers who are striving for similar goals and making progress”. Keeping your circle positive can boost your confidence to break the limit and grow your potential to the maximum. If possible, take the chance to learn from each other!
Important and valuable dates
Believe it or not, some key dates in a year could act as a powerful anchor to our psyches. Take for example New Year’s Day, or simply the day you went back to school, the day you got your first vaccine, and others. Marking on these days help you seal off the past and propel you forward.
“Each marker is a huge opportunity for change,” Milkman said. Make each of these moments a fresh start. Know that it’s okay to mark to have a lot of key dates marked. In fact, Milkman suggests that the more, the better it is.
