E-commerce industry has grown big over the past years in Southeast Asia. Fashion e-commerce is not behind. And Pomelo is one of the now leading fashion e-commerce in the region.
From Boxing Co., Bain & Co., Lazada Thailand to Pomelo
David Jou started as an entrepreneur in 2003, establishing Boxing Co. in America. The company provided storage and shipping services for university student. Though it didn’t go as it planned, the company brought Jo to the path of an entrepreneur.
He then worked at Bain & Co., the Manhattan $10 billion worth company. A little after moving to New Mountain, Jou decided that he needed to build another company. His meeting with Samwer Brothers from the Rocket Internet, back in 2011, led him the way. Samwer Brothers told him that they wanted to start an e-commerce company as the industry is fresh in Southeast Asia.
Having been falling in love to Southeast Asian countries for a long time, Jou agreed to move to Thailand. There he started first as the co-founder of Lazada Thailand. After working as managing director for two years, Jou stepped down from the company. He then launched Pomelo at 2013 in Thailand.
The initial concept of the company is to bring international high trend to Thailand. Now, it is available in other Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore etc.
Bringing Pomelo a step further, it launched Purpose. Purpose is a permanent sustainable line of clothing. The brand uses only ethically sourced fabrics. It also incorporates eco-friendly practices from production to packaging. Pomelo undergoes audits to make sure the factories making the clothes have humane and safe working conditions.
Apart from fashion line, Pomelo also launched BEET that serves as a beauty line. Jou said that BEET is deemed as the next step for Pomelo to grow further.
