Today (14/12/2020), US to start covid-19 vaccination, thus Asian stock markets moved mixed in today’s trading. The lack of market-moving sentiment has made investors put on a wait and see mode.
One of the news awaited by market players is fiscal stimulus in the United States (US). Again, US citizen were disappointed, because the government and Congress continued to give false hopes.
Not long ago, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin revealed that an agreement on stimulus could be reached in a matter of days. However, until now there has been no agreement, just loss.
Today, Chairman of the House of Representatives (one of the two legislative chambers that make up the congress) Nancy Pelosi said the talks could be delayed until December 26, 2020, the day after Christmas Day. This is because at that time various government assistance programs will expire.
“The unemployment benefits will be completed on December 26. So before that, hopefully December 18, we can complete this (stimulus). We cannot go home empty-handed,” said Pelosi, as quoted by Reuters.
But the words of a politician, eh Pelosi, are difficult to hold onto. Nothing can guarantee that the stimulus will be liquid in the near future. Just keep going back and forth.
“There has been no development of the stimulus. Positive patients with the corona virus and the death toll continue to increase so there is the possibility of tighter restrictions. This is a disappointing week,” complained Edward Moya, Senior Market Analyst at OANDA. domiciled in New York, as proclaimed Reuters.
US Citizens Are Ready to Receive Covid-19 Vaccines
On the one hand, there are things that have become a positive sentiment so that they can balance out. This week, the US plans to start the process of injecting an anti-corona virus vaccine. The superpowers will be the second country to initiate mass vaccinations after Britain.
Last weekend, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization for vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech. After the license is issued, vaccines are ready to be shipped across the country.
“Today we deliver hope. It feels great,” said Andrew Boyle, a logistics worker who helped deliver the vaccine, as quoted by Reuters.
Vaccines are key in winning the war against the coronavirus. The vaccine will enable the body to build immunity to ward off the attack of the virus that originally spread in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, People’s Republic of China.
When a large part of the population has received the vaccine, collective immunity (herd immunity) will be created. When more people are immune, the chain of transmission will be cut. Goodbye pandemic, welcome to normal life.
But unfortunately, the news about vaccines has not yet been able to boost the Asian stock market. This is because waiting for the US fiscal stimulus has made market players not yet daring to play aggressively.
