Will Biden End US-China Trade War?

The relationship between America and China has taken a downfall in recent years. The end of the trade war between the two countries was not in sight, at least during Trump‘s presidency. Will Biden bring a difference to the US-China conflict?

Biden plans to cooperate with Europe

Biden‘s key foreign policy adviser, Michael Carpenter, once mentioned the president’s plan to cooperate with Europe in dealing with China. Different from Trump’s “narrow preoccupation with a trade deficit,” Biden’s administration has a different plan in mind. Quoted from SCMP, Carpenter noted that Biden might “work together with our partners across the world to put up a united front and to end this systemic manipulation.”

According to SCMP, Benjamin Haddad, one of the experts in the US-French relation at the Atlantic Council, commended the plan. Haddad commented that Biden’s administration, along with the EU, will “tackle global challenges, from China to climate change.”

However, it will be necessary for parties involved to build mutual trust for the plan to be a success. Erik Brattberg, the director for Europe at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said, “European diplomats will have more trust in the US approach under a Biden administration.”

Restrictions on China might linger for a little longer

Despite all the scheme Biden has, it seems the ban on several Chinese technology companies might not be lifted soon. The US has been skeptical on the security of Chinese-developed apps.

Apps such as TikTok and Grinder have been struggling to meet the demands. Noted from Reuters, dealmakers said Biden’s administration will still be cautious on China’s economic power and its technological advances.

The global co-head of M&A at UBS Group AG UBSG.S, Nestor Paz-Galindo affirmed this. He elaborated that “the nationalistic focus and the high degree of scrutiny on sensitive deals that have emerged in recent years will not disappear anytime soon.”
